Getting Started with Expressions and Equations (6-8)

Take a deep dive into the Expressions and Equations domain and the clusters of standards it includes at each grade level. Study the clusters of standards for each grade, work on math tasks related to each cluster, and learn more about the mathematics education research behind the CCSS.

About This Course

In this course, we will take a deeper look at the Expressions and Equations domain and the clusters of standards it includes at each grade level. You will have an opportunity to study the clusters of standards for each grade, work on math tasks related to each cluster, and also learn more about the mathematics education research behind the Common Core State Standards.

What You'll Learn:

  • That the Expressions and Equations domain is composed of two to three clusters of standards at each grade level—standards that build on arithmetic knowledge from elementary and toward further algebraic work in high school and beyond
  • How the mathematical content in Expressions and Equations fits in the learning progression and describes the development of students’ algebraic reasoning
  • How the three common core shifts and the Standards for Mathematical Practice are integrated in the Expressions and Equations domain

Course Staff

Angela Knotts

Angela Knotts works in both math education research and professional development at WestEd. Before coming to WestEd, she taught middle school and high school math for eight years, mentored and supervised pre-service teachers at USF, NDNU, and Stanford University, and designed and led professional development experiences for pre-service and in-service teachers.

Katie Salguero

Katie Salguero provides professional development in mathematics and works on math education and evaluation research. She has worked on several large-scale federally funded projects such as Aim for Algebra, Making Middle School Mathematics Accessible to All Students, Learning and Teaching Linear Functions, and CPB-PBS Ready to Learn. Before joining WestEd, she taught middle and high school mathematics.

Cathy Carroll

Cathy Carroll specializes in mathematics education and mathematics teacher leadership. She is co-author of Learning to Lead Mathematics Professional Development and Making Mathematics Accessible to English Learners: A Guidebook for Teachers. Cathy served as Director of the Mathematics Renaissance Leadership Alliance, an initiative designed to develop teacher leadership for quality mathematics programs. She also has nearly twenty years of experience teaching middle school mathematics.
