About This Course

Successful implementation of college and career ready standards will require deep changes in all aspects of education. School Leader Module 3: Understanding the Mathematics Standards provides school leaders with information about the Mathematics Standards and embedded instructional shifts. Understanding how the standards and shifts will affect curricular, instructional, and assessment practices will help school leaders guide a successful implementation of college and career ready standards in their school. The module also includes a tool school leaders can use to assess alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment to college and career ready standards.

Participant Outcomes

After completing this module, participants will:

  • Be able to describe the key instructional shifts inherent in college and career ready standards for Mathematics and how the shifts impact curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

About the Series

This professional learning series for school leaders includes three modules. The first module in the series provides a broad overview of what school leaders need to know to guide a successful implementation of college and career ready standards in their school. The second module explores the ELA and Literacy Standards and embedded instructional shifts with a focus on how they impact curriculum, instruction, and assessment. This, the third module in the series, looks at the Mathematics Standards and instructional shifts through the same lens. Both Modules 2 and 3 provide school leaders with an opportunity to become familiar with a tool they can use to assess how well their curriculum, instruction, and assessment are aligned to college and career ready standards.

Course Staff

Mary Ellen Hannon


Mary Ellen Hannon has over 30 years of successful educational systems experience, including extensive understanding in school leadership, data analysis, curriculum design, and school improvement management. Mary Ellen has served as an executive coach and facilitator for the Florida Rural Turnaround Leadership project. Her responsibilities included developing and facilitating training for superintendents, school board members and district leaders on turning around low performing schools and districts. Recently, Mary Ellen has focused her efforts in Connecticut supporting the alignment to the new CT Core Standards through the CT Systems of Professional Learning for elementary teachers. Mary Ellen has also been working with NH and MI school districts to provide principal coaching in priority schools. Mary Ellen has been appointed to the NH Professional Standards Board, which reviews teacher certification standards and higher education programs for new teacher graduates. Prior to joining PCG Education, Mary Ellen served as a Superintendent of Schools, assistant superintendent, curriculum director, and teacher.
