In this course, participants will learn about the concept of Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) and the requirements under IDEA of educating students alongside their nondisabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate.

About This Course

The sessions in the course are designed to provide learners with information regarding the legal aspects of LRE and how LRE is an integral part of developing the Individualized Education Program (IEP) as well as how to incorporate curriculum based on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles that celebrate and accommodate individual learning differences.

*In order to apply for a CEU or a PD Unit, teachers have to complete all 7 courses in this series: SE501, SE502, SE503, SE504, SE505, SE506, SE507.

Amy Howie is a Special Education Subject Matter Expert with Public Consulting Group. She is the Director of Project SUCCESS, Indiana’s Resource Network for Common Core State Standards for Students with Disabilities. In this role, she provides universal and targeted supports to teachers and administrators across the state. Amy regularly provides professional development to districts on assessment, instruction and programming for special education students. She works collaboratively with the Indiana Department of Education to respond to the individual needs of districts, building statewide capacity for increased achievement of students with significant cognitive disabilities.
