Through the lens of violence prevention, this course will provide you with the tools and knowledge to implement a media literacy curriculum in the elementary classroom and facilitate informed, practical conversations about media influence on attitudes and behaviors. With a strong focus on healthy decision making through critical thinking, analysis and media deconstruction, you will gain the media literacy skills to help your students become more thoughtful consumers and producers of media content choices. 

This training course also includes digital copies of all the materials needed for successful classroom implementation, including teacher’s guide, 12 lesson plans, handouts, media images, video clips and student worksheets.

About This Course

As educators, you most likely witness first-hand the impact of media on your students. According to the  AAP, American Academy of Pediatrics, media exposure can contribute significantly to obesity, poor nutrition, cigarette & alcohol use, violent, aggressive and anti-social behavior, risky sexual attitudes and behavior, poor self-image and low self-esteem, nightmares, disrupted sleep, anxiety and lowered academic achievement. [Pediatrics, December 2006]

Of particular concern to many parents and teachers is the role media play in violent, aggressive and bullying behaviors. Media literacy has been identified as an effective intervention, but how do we teach media literacy to younger learners? In this 8 hour self-paced course, you will engage in activities and online discussions to build your knowledge of media literacy and Media Literacy for Safe and Healthy Choices, an evidence based curriculum for grades 4-6, with an eye toward practical implementation in the classroom. Most activities are based on those you will use with your students so there is an explicit focus on learning the curriculum by experiencing it.

Media Literacy for Safe and Healthy Choices Training was produced by a team of Media Power Youth www.mediapoweryouth.org, PCG Education and Pepper professionals representing decades of expertise in media literacy, education, at-risk prevention, and online course development led by Media Power Youth Education and Training Manager, Sarah Shanahan, MAT, PCG Education and Pepper’s Blended Learning and Online Course Development Specialist, Michael Weinraub, MEd, MBA, and Media Power Youth Training Coordinator, Tina Raczek, MEd Technology. Media Literacy for Safe & Healthy Choices, Media Power Youth’s evidence based curriculum for grades 4-6, is the product of 10 years of research, development, implementation and evaluation in public schools. Evaluation was conducted by senior research scientists, Drs. Ron Slaby and David Bickham,Center on Media and Child Health (CMCH), Children’s Hospital Boston, under the direction of Dr. Michael Rich. www.cmch.org  The curriuclum is listed on the National Registry of Evidence Based Programs and Practices (NREPP) of the Substance Abuse and Mental health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
