Welcome to Developing Vocabulary! This module is the fifth of six online modules in Building a Strong Foundation for Lifelong Literacy Success, a professional learning series aimed at supporting teachers’ efforts to promote reading achievement in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

About This Course

This module delves into the intricate process of vocabulary development in students, starting with an examination of research findings. It explores the inherent language demands of vocabulary acquisition, particularly for Emergent Bilinguals, and differentiates academic language from social language. The module outlines various strategies for vocabulary instruction, emphasizing both direct and indirect methods. Direct instruction is dissected into selecting words for explicit teaching and implementing a six-step instructional routine. The module also discusses morphemes and their role in unlocking word meanings, along with everyday teaching strategies to enhance vocabulary comprehension. Finally, it covers independent vocabulary acquisition strategies such as morphemic analysis and context clues, providing a comprehensive understanding of vocabulary development and assessment.
